Simple: Wiccans often try to connect themselves to the ancient native practices of Europe (depending on the Wiccan, these can have more or less historical truth... frankly, most of them tend to pay very little attention to research, though) which were very unjustly persecuted by the Church in its crusade to eradicate all other faiths (this part is quite true, sadly.)

Imagine if Wiccans were bomb-strapping terrorists and you've got our Elder friends.
Now, I'll admit, despite my atheist dislike of all religions and my dislike of Wiccan ahistorical approaches, they ARE a peaceful, accepting bunch in real life and I appreciate that.

Wiccans, and the vast peacful majority of all religious people are greatly appreciated.
